Tomato Rasam Recipe: A Spicy and Aromatic South Indian Delight
Tomato Rasam is a spicy and tangy South Indian soup that is perfect for chilly evenings or a comforting meal. Made with a variety of spices, tamarind pulp, and ripe tomatoes, this dish is packed with flavor and nutrients. The dish is also easy to prepare and can be made in a jiffy. In this recipe, I will show you how to make the perfect tomato rasam with homemade rasam powder.

Ingredients for the Rasam Powder:
- 10 Red Chilies
- 1 Tbsp Cumin
- 1 Tbsp Black Pepper
- 10 Garlic Pods
- 1 Tbsp Coriander Seeds
Ingredients for making the Tomato Rasam:
- 3 Large Tomatoes, pureed in a blender
- Small lemon-sized Tamarind, soaked in hot water and pulp squeezed out
- 1/4 Tsp Turmeric
- Salt, to taste
- Curry Leaves
- Fresh Coriander
For the Seasoning:
- 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
- 1/2 Tsp Urad Dal
- 3 Dry Red Chilies
- 5 Garlic Pods, crushed
- 2 Tsp Oil
- Fresh Curry Leaves
- Fresh Coriander for Garnish
Instructions for making the Rasam Powder:
Add all the ingredients to a blender.
Blend them together until you have a coarse powder.
Your aromatic and tasty rasam powder is now ready.
Instructions for making the Tomato Rasam:
Heat a deep vessel on medium heat.
Add the tamarind pulp, tomato puree, salt, turmeric, rasam powder, 5 pods of crushed garlic, and a few fresh curry leaves and coriander to the vessel.
Bring the mixture to a boil.
Once the mixture comes to a boil, take it off the stove.
Instructions for making the Seasoning:
Heat a kadai on medium heat and add oil.
Once the oil is hot, add urad dal, mustard seeds, and red chilies.
Fry them slightly.
Now add the curry leaves and crushed garlic.
Pour the tomato rasam into the kadai.
Garnish with fresh coriander.
